Equine Dermatology

Because every inch of skin on any animal is part of the whole organ system, taking the time to evaluate all nooks and crannies is extremely important. Skin reacts to disease entities by producing extra cells (flakes), inflammation (redness and swelling), and pruritis (itchiness). Ultimately, these reactions can obscure the original problem. This means as skin disease advances, the original cause can be missed and finding a cure becomes less likely. This is why successful treatment is often linked to early, accurate diagnosis. The trial and error approach usually does not work unless a complete medically guided protocol is in place.
